Twins Shin Guards Review: Are They Worth It?
Twins Shin Guards Review: Are They Worth It?
Twins Special shin guards have been a familiar sight in Muay Thai gyms for years. They're traditional Thai-style shin guards with plenty of padding, good coverage and a fairly straightforward design.
But are they actually worth buying?
If protection is high on your list, Twins are easy to recommend. They're not necessarily the lightest or most minimal shin guards available, but that's not really what they're trying to be.
Here's our take.
Are Twins Special Shin Guards Good?
Yes. Particularly for Muay Thai sparring.
Twins Special shin guards offer substantial protection across both the shin and instep, which is exactly what most people need when they're regularly kicking and checking with training partners.
They're a good option for:
- Muay Thai sparring
- Kickboxing
- Partner drills
- Technical training
- Regular gym use
If you're looking for something extremely lightweight and barely noticeable on your legs, there are other options worth considering.
If you want protection and a traditional Thai-style shin guard, Twins make a lot of sense.

What Do Twins Shin Guards Feel Like?
The first thing you'll notice is the padding.
Twins generally lean towards protection rather than trying to make their shin guards as thin and lightweight as possible.
For regular sparring, that's not a bad trade-off.
The shin section provides coverage across the front of the lower leg, while the padded instep protects the top of the foot. Rear straps secure the guards around the leg while you're training.
Like any shin guard, getting the correct size matters. A good pair shouldn't constantly rotate around your leg every time you throw a kick.
Twins SGL10 Shin Guards
The SGL10 is one of the Twins models we'd look at first for regular Muay Thai training.
It's a traditional, well-padded design offering protection across the shin and instep, with adjustable straps securing the guards around the lower leg.
They're particularly suited to people who prioritise protection during sparring rather than wanting the smallest possible shin guard.

Are Twins Shin Guards Good for Sparring?
This is probably where they make the most sense.
Sparring shin guards need to protect both you and the person you're training with. Thin padding might feel great for movement, but there's a balance to be found when you're repeatedly exchanging kicks.
Twins provides plenty of padding across the main impact areas.
For beginners especially, we'd generally favour proper protection over worrying about shaving a little weight from your equipment.
As your training develops, you'll work out what style of shin guard you personally prefer.
How Do Twins Shin Guards Fit?
Your shin guards should cover the main length of your shin without interfering with your knee.
The instep section should sit naturally across the top of your foot, while the rear straps should be secure enough to reduce excessive movement.
You don't want them painfully tight, but you also shouldn't need to straighten them after every combination.
Height and leg dimensions are generally more useful when choosing shin guard sizing than bodyweight alone.
Check the sizing information for the particular model you're buying, as fit can vary between models.
Are Twins Shin Guards Good for Beginners?
Yes.
In fact, this is one area where buying decent equipment from the beginning makes sense.
You don't need the most expensive equipment in the gym when you're starting Muay Thai, but shin guards take a lot of punishment. You're going to kick, check kicks and accidentally clash shins with people.
It happens.
A protective pair of shin guards means one less thing to worry about while you're learning.
Twins are also established enough that you aren't buying something highly specialised. They're straightforward Muay Thai shin guards that can continue serving you as your training progresses.
Twins Shin Guards: Pros and Cons
What We Like
Plenty of protection:
This is probably their biggest strength. Twins shin guards are well suited to regular sparring and partner training.
Traditional Muay Thai design:
They're built around the requirements of Muay Thai rather than being generic martial arts protection.
Good shin and instep coverage:
Both major impact areas receive substantial padding.
Suitable for different experience levels:
There's nothing about them that makes them exclusively beginner or advanced equipment.
What We'd Consider
They're not the most minimal option:
If your main priority is having the lightest possible shin guard, you may prefer another design.
Fit matters:
Like any strapped shin guard, choosing the wrong size can result in unnecessary movement during training.
Protection comes with some bulk:
That's the trade-off. More padding generally means more material around your leg.
Twins vs Other Thai Shin Guards
Twins isn't automatically the right choice for everybody.
Brands such as Fairtex produce excellent Muay Thai shin guards too, and differences in shape, padding and fit mean some fighters naturally prefer one brand over another.
We wouldn't choose based purely on the logo.
Think about what matters most to you: protection, weight, mobility, fit and how often you're sparring.
We'll cover the differences between Twins and Fairtex shin guards separately rather than trying to squeeze an entire comparison into this review.
Are Twins Shin Guards Worth It?
For regular Muay Thai training, yes.
Twins Special has kept the basic formula pretty straightforward: substantial padding, good coverage and a traditional Thai-style construction.
That's particularly appealing if you're buying shin guards primarily for sparring.
They're not trying to be the lightest guards available, and that won't suit everybody. But if your priorities are protection, coverage and dependable training equipment, Twins deserve to be on your shortlist.
For most people looking at the brand, we'd start by comparing the full Twins shin guard range and the Twins SGL10 collection.
Get the right size, strap them on and train.
